1953-2016
Bernie Velasquez passed away during the night of November 2, 2016. Bernie was Jackson & Hertogs’ receptionist from February 2, 2000 until July 31, 2014. While Bernie left the firm two years ago, she remains very much a part of the firm—she put an indelible mark on how our front office functions. She will always be very much part of the firm. We are all quite saddened by this loss. Our thoughts are with her family and many friends. Even though Bernie is gone she is still in our hearts.
Throughout Bernie’s tenure with the firm, she was the first person most clients came in contact with when they called J&H or came into our office. She treated our clients and visitors warmly and always with good humor. She teased all the delivery guys and was able to get the UPS drivers to wait for those last envelopes each day. Bernie was incredibly outgoing and she had a strong commitment to helping people. She juggled the phones, incoming and outgoing mail, and kept the front of the office ticking, always with a smile on her face.
Bernie was the welcome wagon for new employees of the firm, the decision maker for the firm lunches and treats and part of the emotional backbone of the firm as we went through changes including Allen and Jeff retiring. She brightened so many of our days with her sense of humor and carrying nature. An avid sports fan, she rooted for all the local teams but by far, her two favorites were the Giants and 49ers. She had the daytime Giants’ score at the ready and we all knew when there as a really good play since we could hear her cheering from the reception area.
Bernie’s background was in the hospitality industry and she made the move to reception easily. She was a natural. She always wanted to do her best, support the team and provide good customer service. I think all of us are better human beings for having known Bernie. She will always be remembered for her warmth, friendliness, and caring personality.
