Canadian special measures for those affected by the U.S. Executive Order: “Protecting the Nation from Foreign Terrorist Entry into the United States”

On January 31, 2017, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada implemented a public policy to assist individuals in Canada who cannot travel to the U.S. due to the Executive Order impacting nationals from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen. Affected individuals can apply for temporary status in Canada, or may apply to have their current temporary status extended, if they:

  • Made travel arrangements to enter the U.S.
  • Have documents normally required to enter the U.S.
  • Are unable to enter into the U.S. due to this Executive Order

Individuals must provide an explanation on how they are affected, as all applications will be assessed on a case-by-case basis. Further, they must meet Canada’s admissibility criteria to benefit from this public policy. There are no government fees associated with applying, and the Canadian government aims to process applications on an urgent basis. This public policy will remain in effect until April 30, 2017.
