On October 24, 2016, a final USCIS fee rule was published in the Federal Register (81 FR 73292). The new fees will become effective 60 days later, on December 23, 2016. Department of Homeland Security initially published the Proposed Rule on USCIS fee changes in May 2016 and received 475 public comments on it. Most commenters opposed the overall increases in fees. Some commenters believed that the proposed fees are too high. The purpose of the fee changes is to ensure that USCIS can recover the full costs for its services and maintain an adequate level of service. This is the first fee adjustment since 2010 as a result of a comprehensive fee review conducted by USCIS.
