As of October 2, 2020, the filing fees charged by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will increase. All submissions that are postmarked on or after that date must include the new fee.
The increase in fees is approximately 20%, and will serve to help USCIS recover operational costs to improve its adjudications and customer service processes, fund the costs of providing the premium services, and modernize its information technology systems.
News of this increase was released as “USCIS Adjusts Fees to Help Meet Operational Needs”. Months before this announcement, furloughs were publicized to take effect as of the end of August 2020. The furloughs were set to affect approximately 30% of the USCIS workforce. Since the publication of the increase in fees, the furloughs appear to be averted at this time.
